Tej I Love You movie review

Tej (Sai Dharam Tej) rescues a woman from two men by killing them when he was 10 years old. As the lady doesn’t show up in court, Tej gets jailed for 7 years. Tej has a caring family who treat him with utmost love. His uncle banishes him from the family when he gets his cousin sister married to her lover a day before her arranged marriage. He meets Nandini (Anupama Parameswaran) and falls in love with her. After a brief teasing game, Tej expresses his feelings to her but she doesn’t reciprocate his love. When Nandini realizes her feelings for Tej, unfortunate turn of incidents separate them forever. How Tej succeeded in his love forms the crux of the story.

The story of Tej I Love You is a mixture of Karunakaran’s previous films. They just took the flashback Prabhas narrates in Darling and developed it into a complete film. The film is highly predictable filled with stereotype scenes and clichés. The movie has hardly half an hour story with fillers throughout to make it a feature film. The emotions in the film are mechanical and the chemistry between the lead pair is non-existent. The comedy works once in a while but is mostly boring. There is family drama, flashbacks and comedy forced into the story even when there is no scope for them.

Sai Dharam Tej performs what he could. He is good at emotional scenes but for comedy he relies heavily upon Sapthagiri. The body language, expressions and dialogue delivery resemble that of Sapthagiri in many scenes. As if that’s not enough, he copies the getup of Sapthagiri for a couple of scenes. Anupama Parameswaran impresses in her role. She is apt as a mischievous girl but her performance in emotional scenes is passable. Although there is a huge family, only a few actors are noticeable and all others are present in the background to fill the screen.

The story is weak and there is no way it could have been improved. The cliched elements like family reunion, sister’s marriage, one side love, group of friends, music band, village fight, airport climax etc are rehashed throughout the career of Karunakaran. He still tries to make a story out of it. The dialogues are good but there are hardly any memorable dialogues. The production values are impressive. The music by Gopi Sundar is good. The cinematography is major highlight of the movie. Editing is mediocre without any proper order. The art design is good. The direction is good as Karunakaran elevates emotions in some simple scenes.

Overall, Tej I Love You is a routine romantic comedy film with predictable story and full of clichés. There are hardly any elements that can engage audience throughout the film.
